Language proficiency (compétence linguistique)
An individual’s unrehearsed, general language communication ability. [NATO agreed]
NATO STANAG 6001 SLP Adoption
Participating nations adopt the table of language proficiency levels for the purpose of:
- a) Communicating language requirements for international staff appointments.
- b) Recording and reporting, in international correspondence, measures of language proficiency.
- c) Comparing national standards through a standardized table while preserving each nation’s right to maintain its own internal proficiency standards.
Proficiency Levels (0-5)
- Level 0 - No proficiency
- Level 1 - Survival
- Level 2 - Functional
- Level 3 - Professional
- Level 4 - Expert
- Level 5 - Highly-articulate native
